The History of Brighton Beach

Brighton Beach formed a club in 1905, with Mrs Hetty Ballard as its first President and Mrs Wallace as Secretary. These ladies at Brighton Beach were amazing. They not only formed the club themselves without male assistance, but they also ran it completely on their own for two years. This included cutting the greens with a hand-mower and everything that is involved in putting on a game of bowls.
On 26th September 1907, the President of Brighton Beach, Mrs Bleazby was elected the first State President of the VLBA and meetings were held at the Brighton Beach Bowling Club for some time. Mrs Bleazby held the position of VLBA President for 30 years, and during that time she was also five-times President of her own club. It is interesting to note that in all those years she never bowled once.
In 1907, they generously allowed gentlemen to join! When the men left to take part in World War 1 in 1914, the ladies once again took over the running of the club until cessation of the war.
